Li Shangfu, the Chinese defence minister, arrived in Belarus on August 16, according to a report by the national news agency of Belarus, BELTA.

Li’s journey, during which he will meet with the military brass of Belarus, is a component of a state visit to both Russia and Belarus that was initially announced on August 14.

BELTA states that during the discussions, relevant issues of military cooperation in areas of shared interest will be covered. Li is also anticipated to visit a number of military installations in the nation.

On August 15, Li had a meeting with Sergei Shoigu, the defence minister of Russia, outside the Moscow Conference on International Security.

Li reportedly cautioned against purported Western plans to “use Taiwan to contain China,” warning they would “surely end in failure.” This is according to Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

As Russia’s all-out war against Ukraine goes on, there is rising concern over the possibility that Beijing would join Moscow’s side more and more.

On July 27, a report from the American Office of the Director of National Intelligence described how China was sending Moscow dual-use technologies, components for military hardware, and other supplies worth millions of dollars.

Although there have not yet been any examples of China providing Russia with lethal military assistance that have been independently verified, Chinese-made mortars have frequently been seen in Russian ammo stockpiles that Ukrainian forces have taken control of.
