Indian cricket stalwart Shikhar Dhawan has expressed his astonishment at being omitted from the squad for the Asian Games, a move that contradicted expectations due to his significant role in India’s alternate teams. The left-handed batsman’s absence from the team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad was a notable surprise, especially given his recent temporary captaincy contributions. Dhawan, while taken aback by the decision, adopted a philosophical approach, acknowledging the selectors’ unique perspective and choosing to accept the outcome gracefully.

“When my name was not there, I was a bit shocked. But, then, I was like they have a different thought process, you just have to accept it,” Dhawan told PTI. “Happy that Rutu [Gaikwad] will lead the side. All the young boys are there, I am sure they will do well.”

Dhawan’s past experiences of being in and out of the team mirror his current situation. He recalls a similar scenario before the 2019 World Cup, where strong pre-tournament performances earned him a spot, resulting in a memorable century. His plans were, however, disrupted by an injury. Dhawan acknowledges the uncertainties of cricket and remains optimistic about potential future opportunities, especially considering India’s ongoing fitness concerns.

“I still enjoy training and I still enjoy the game, these are the things in my control. Whatever decision is made, I respect that. I have not spoken to any selector [about my future]. I keep goingto the NationalCricket Academy [in Bengaluru]. I enjoy my time there, the facilities are great. NCA has shaped my career and I am grateful for it.”

The cricketer highlighted his passion for training and the sport, lauding the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for its role in shaping his career. Although he has not engaged with selectors about his future, Dhawan’s commitment to refining his skills at the academy underscores his dedication.

Despite his exclusion from the Asian Games squad and absence from national play since December 2022, Dhawan’s enthusiasm remains undiminished. He eagerly awaits the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, aiming to contribute effectively to the Punjab Kings. Dhawan’s surprise exclusion serves as a motivation to embrace future challenges with renewed resolve, illustrating his enduring love for the game.
