Delhi’s revenue minister, Atishi Marlena, has written to the chief secretary, Naresh Kumar, requesting that he give orders to staff members to assist in handling the different crises that have arisen as a result of flooding in several areas of the capital.
The minister has instructed the chief secretary to address the water deficit as well as other requirements like electricity, sanitation, and food quality in all of these aid camps right away.
She further urged Kumar to punish any officer whose negligence would put people in the relief camps in danger.
“Impact of Delhi Ordinance proving to be fatal during Delhi floods relief works. Bureaucrats showing laxity and insubordination even during the peak of a crisis, not taking instructions from ministers,” the Delhi minister complained, “Trying to contact Divisional Commissioner since morning but he is not answering my phone calls or responding to my messages.”
“People living in these camps are our responsibility, provide all facilities to them immediately,” the minister said in the letter.
The Yamuna river had overflowed earlier in the month after a particularly heavy downpour. This week, the water reached a height not seen since 1978 of 208.66 metres.
Even though the level has already dropped to 207.68 metres, there are still some flooded places.
Among other places, the floodwaters had reached the Supreme Court. Authorities have been knee-deep in rescue operations due to roads and low-lying regions that have been swamped.
On Friday, there was light rain in a few locations in Delhi.
Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister, stated that efforts were being made to release the Yamuna Barrage’s five gates so that floodwater could be drained. “The ITO Barrage’s first obstructed gate has been opened. The five gates will soon all be unlocked.
