Sri Lanka, a country with a rich cricketing history, finds itself in an unfamiliar position as they fight for the World Cup Qualifiers in a bid to secure a spot in the highly anticipated World Cup 2023. This situation has prompted legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan to express his disappointment, highlighting the team’s underwhelming performances in recent years.

Muralitharan voiced his sentiments, stating that it is unfortunate for a country like Sri Lanka to have to go through the qualifiers. He emphasized that the team has not lived up to its potential over the past four years, except for their success in the T20 format during the Asia Cup. This contrasts with their past glory, where they were strong contenders and even reached the finals of the 2011 World Cup against India.

“Unfortunate for a country like us to play the qualifiers. But we haven’t played to our potential in the last four years. One successful campaign we had, which is the Asia Cup but it is T20 cricket.” – Muttiah Muralitharan

The fact that recent Asia Cup winners now find themselves in the position of having to prove their worth in the qualifiers is perplexing. It is undoubtedly an embarrassing situation for a team that was once considered one of the top competitors on the cricketing stage.
