After a hiatus of 12 years, the highly anticipated Mercedes-Benz AMG SL is all geared up to reenter the Indian market. The German automaker will introduce the brand-new AMG SL 55 4Matic+ Roadster tomorrow. Following the tradition of its predecessors, the classic Mercedes-Benz SL will be imported as a completely built unit (CBU) and marketed in India as the SL55 roadster. The SL has always been an iconic vehicle in the country, with various iterations available over the years. The seventh-generation SL, the current model, will be offered in India, while the sixth-generation SL was not released here.

The upcoming Roadster launch marks the introduction of the seventh-generation SL, which is expected to replace both the AMG GT Roadster and the S-Class Cabriolet, positioning itself as a versatile and comprehensive offering. The new SL boasts several advanced enhancements and technologies, including standard four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, promising enhanced agility, stability, and an exhilarating driving experience. Mercedes-Benz pays homage to the SL’s legacy by reintroducing the fabric roof and the 2+2 seating configuration while incorporating the latest automotive manufacturing advancements.

The SL55 AMG will feature a host of amenities found in other Mercedes models, such as a fully digital instrument panel, carbon fiber interiors in line with AMG specifications, and an 11.9-inch MBUX vertical touchscreen infotainment system with augmented reality-powered head-up display, tailored to AMG vehicles. Additional highlights include a multi-function steering wheel, automatic climate control, anti-lock braking system, and driver and passenger airbags. Notably, the seventh-generation SL will be exclusively available in the AMG version, aligning itself with AMG components, drivetrain, chassis, and electrical design, which it shares with the second-generation AMG GT, promising exceptional performance and driving dynamics.

Under the hood, the Mercedes-AMG SL55 will be equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, generating a peak power of 476bhp and maximum torque of 700Nm. Coupled with the company’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system and a nine-speed AMG Speedshift gearbox, this configuration enables the car to achieve an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in less than 3.8 seconds.

With an anticipated price of approximately Rs 2 crore (ex-showroom), the SL55 is expected to follow in the footsteps of its fifth-generation predecessor, which gained a devoted following upon its initial release in the Indian market. Car enthusiasts can look forward to experiencing the epitome of luxury and performance with the reintroduction of the Mercedes-AMG SL in India.
