Usman Khawaja showcased his brilliance on Day 2 of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, leading a remarkable fightback for Australia. Accompanied by Travis Head and Alex Carey, Khawaja’s solid contributions played a pivotal role in shifting the momentum of the game.
Initially, England had the upper hand, courtesy of Stuart Broad’s early wickets. However, the tides turned after tea as Travis Head unleashed a counter-attack, putting Moeen Ali under pressure while Khawaja stood firm. Despite England’s missed opportunities, Australia concluded the day unscathed. Moeen Ali managed to claim two wickets but conceded runs, allowing Australia to finish strongly.
In a post-match interview, Khawaja opened up about his emotional celebration, citing the pressure of previous Ashes tours and media criticism. His exceptional innings serves as a testament to his determination and reaffirms his ability to perform on English soil.
I honestly don’t know. Think it was a combination of three Ashes tours in England, being dropped in two of them. I don’t read the media, genuinely I don’t, but I’m getting sprayed by the crowd as I’m walking out there today and as I’m going to the nets that I can’t score runs in England, so guess it was more emotional than normal. Feel like I’m saving this all the time, same thing happened in India. Not that I have a point to prove, but it’s nice to go out and score runs for Australia just to show everyone that the last 10 years haven’t been a fluke.
