Conrad Sangma, the chief leader of the National People’s Party, and 11 other individuals, including two deputy chief ministers, took oath to serve as Meghalaya’s chief minister for a 2nd consecutive term on Tuesday in Shillong wherein, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present.

Prestone Tynsong of the NPP and Alexander Laloo Hek of the BJP were among the twelve members of the council of ministers who received the oath from Meghalaya governor Phagu Chauhan. As deputy chief ministers, Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar took oath as well.

Eight National People’s Party (NPP) MLAs, two UDP MLAs, one BJP MLA, and one HSPDP MLA each received the oath of secrecy at Raj Bhavan to serve as ministers in Sangma’s cabinet.

Together with PM Modi, other attendees included BJP president JP Nadda, Union home minister Amit Shah, and Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam and NEDA convenor.

The NPP was represented by Marcuise N. Marak, Rakkam A. Sangma, Ampareen Lyngdoh, Comingone Ymbon, and A. T. Mondal among those sworn in as cabinet ministers. A ministerial oath was also taken by AL Hek of the BJP, Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla of the UDP, and Shakliar Warjri of the HSPDP. Before to their departure for the swearing-in event at Raj Bhavan, all cabinet ministers held a prayer meeting with Sangma Tuesday earlier in the day.

With the backing of 45 MLAs, including two from the BJP, the NPP-led alliance has placed a claim to forming the state’s administration.

Sangma defeated Bernard N. Marak of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the South Tura district by a margin of 5,016.

The United Democratic Party (UDP) won 11 seats in the assembly elections, according to figures released on Thursday. Five seats were won by Congress. Five seats were also awarded to Trinamool Congress, which had already inducted all Congress MLAs.

Three parties won two seats each: BJP, People’s Democratic Front, and Hill State People’s Democratic Party. Four seats went to the Voice of the People Party. Independent candidates took home two seats. While they were allies in the previous administration, the BJP and NPP ran separate campaigns for the assembly.
