India is the fastest-growing economy across the world and the European Union is both its biggest market and trading partner. These two unions have much in common like democratic political systems. Both of them are proud of their democracies, however are also under the pressure of interest-oriented neighbours.

Recently, Indian Air Force received five Rafale fighter jets from France during the ongoing border and trade tensions with China that have strengthened the relations between these two Nations. The relations of India and Europe are several decades old. India was among the first Nations to establish diplomatic relations with the European Economic Community.  In the year 2004, during the 5th India-EU Summit at The Hague, the bilateral relations were upgraded to a ‘Strategic Partnership’. Both sides adopted a Joint Action Plan to offer strengthened dialogue and consultation mechanisms in the political and economic disciplines, boosting trade and investment, and promoting the cultures.

Earlier this year, speaking in New Delhi, EU foreign policy Chief, Josep Borell stressed on the importance of close ties and stated, “The relationship between India and Europe must become more strategic given the importance of the Indo-Pacific region.”

European Nations like France are the closest defence partners of India. Earlier as well, the 2005 sale of the Scorpene submarines equipped with Exocet anti-ship missiles, Mirage fighters and their upgradation played a vital role for Indian Navy and Air Force which clearly showcase the affinity of the two sides. In 2022, India will celebrate its 75th Independence Day and organize the presidency of the G20. Focusing on the future ties, Borell said, “Let’s use the time in the run-up to 2022 to listen to your views of how the world should look in this century and what can be done together”.

In the upcoming years, the EU and India are expected to sign more deals in other domains of critical infrastructure and strengthen each other’s security and economy.
