Meta-powered instant messaging platform, WhatsApp has launched 5 new updates for its key feature- the status. The 5 new updates include a Private Audience selector, Voice status, Status reaction, Status profile rings, and Link previews.  A private audience selector and status reaction were the most asked updates for the feature.

  • The private audience selector can be used to update the privacy settings per status so that users can choose who gets to view their status each time they update it.
  • Voice status update will allow users to record and share voice messages for up to 30 seconds on their WhatsApp status.
  • Status profile rings will be present around a contact’s profile picture whenever they share a status update. It will be visible in the chat lists, group participant lists, and contact info. This update is the same as that in meta-powered Instagram.
  • Link previews allow the audience, Visual previews that make the statuses look better, and also give user’s contacts a better idea of what the link is before they click.

The updates have already been visible to many users and will become global in a couple of weeks, stated Meta.

Apart from these confirmed new status updates, there is also news about the possible changes in the number of media selections. Currently, the platform only allows 30 media files at a time however according to sources, WhatsApp may increase the number to 100 media files at a time without provision for repetition of the same media file. The update is in the beta testing phase however the timeline for its rolling out hasn’t been told.
