The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold 10% reservation for members of economically weaker sections (EWS) in admissions and government positions was applauded on Monday by senior BJP politician and former Union minister Uma Bharti, who also called for quotas in the private sector.
The previous chief minister of Madhya Pradesh also stated that states like MP, where the OBC population is significant, can implement 27% quota for the Other Backward Classes under certain circumstances.
In a historic decision, the Supreme Court confirmed the constitutionality of the 103rd Constitutional Amendment, which grants the EWS a 10% reservation in admissions and government positions, by a vote of 3:2.
According to the court, the quota does not go against the Constitution’s fundamental principles.
40 petitions contesting the legality of the 103rd Constitutional Amendment issued by the Center in 2019 were decided in four unique ways by a five-judge constitution bench led by Chief Justice UU Lalit.
Welcoming the decision, Uma Bharti in a tweet said, “All the poor people have the same caste, they are poor. This reservation will bring unity in the country. My appeal is that all the needy people in the world unite and fight their battle for a better life.”

“We should implement the system of reservation in the private sector also,” she said in another tweet.
