Central Armed Police Forces are structured with BSF, ITBP, SSB main border protecting role. CISF’s Defense of Critical Institutions, Assisting Police in Combating Law & Order, Anti-Terrorist Activities, Anti Naxal Activities through CRPF, NSG.

In addition to the primary function, all CAPFs are active in assisting the Law & Order Police and even the Counter-Terrorist Operations Unit.

After seven forces that come under the Ministry of Home Affairs, they were considered paramilitary forces but were reclassified as Central Armed Police Forces in March 2011 to avoid confusion:

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
The primary task of the CRPF is to support the State / Union Territories in policing operations to preserve law and order as well as combat insurgency. With 246 battalions and various other facilities, the CRPF is considered the largest paramilitary force in India and has been sanctioned by more than 300,000 staff since 2019.

Border Security Force (BSF)
The Border Security Force (BSF)’s primary role is to guard the country’s land frontiers, except the mountains. The authorized strength in 186 battalions is 257,363 men, and is led by an Indian Police Service Officer.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)
Through Karakoram Pass at Ladakh to Diphu La in Arunachal Pradesh, which spans a total distance of 2,488 km (1,546 mi), the Indo-Tibetan Border Police are assigned to protect the border with China. They have 90,000 personnel in 60 battalions.

Sashastra Seema Bal
The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is meant to secure the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan frontiers. By 2019, 94,261 personnel were involved in 73 battalions and 98,965 personnel were authorized.

Central Industrial Security Force
One of the world’s main industrial defense units, the CISF offers support for a number of public sector entities (PSUs) and other vital infrastructure services, including airports. In 132 battalions, they have a total of around 144,418 employees.

National Security Guard
The NSG is an specialized anti-terrorist organization of the Indian ministry of home affairs (MHA). It has been established on October 15, 1984 “in order to prevent terrorist activities and protect states from internal disturbances” following operation Blue Star, golden temple and the assassination of Indra Gandhi.

Assam Rifles
The Assam Rifles are India’s oldest paramilitary force. They perform several positions, including providing internal protection under the leadership of the army by counter-insurgency. And border defense operations, providing humanitarian assistance to civilians. And providing medical care and education to citizens in rural areas.
