The Supreme Court sentenced fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya to four months jail term on Monday. SC fines Mallya Rs 2000 and warns him that if he fails to pay the fine, his jail term will be extended by 2 months.
The top court bench said, “Adequate punishment is a must. Mallya didn’t show any remorse,”
Five years ago, the supreme court (SC) found Mallya in contempt for transferring USD 40 million to his family members. The Supreme Court of India has ordered Vijay Mallya, his family members, to return USD 40 million plus interest at 8% for violating a debt settlement agreement.
The court says, In case of failure to repay USD 40 Million, recovery officers will be entitled to take action, govt is to provide support needed in recovery.
