Russia enters its day 17th against Ukraine in a brutal war. Latest reports from Ukraine suggest that Putin is planning to create a sort of an offensive ‘terrorist attack’ at the Chernobyl power plant site, however, blame it on the Ukrainian forces.
This Wednesday the main electric connection to the nuclear plant was cut by the Russian troops at the site. If the nuclear plant is shut for more than 48 hours, the nuclear discharge could result in a much bigger catastrophe than the April 1986 blast that shook Ukrainians. Close to 50,000 civilians were affected and evacuated from the nearby areas of the site back then.
One of Ukraine’s defence intelligence agency worriedly stated in a Facebook post, “The spent nuclear fuel is secured by the surrounding water, if the plant shuts down within 48 hours it would create a cloud, a radioactive cloud which could grow in and blow over Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and Europe.”
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confidently brushed concerns over the possible release of radioactive elements there is enough water in the cooling systems to withhold the spent fuel, which is very old. The water-cooling systems will hold and not cause any disaster. There are backup diesel generators in place at the site and it will help keep the site running for the next 72 hours.
Russia enthusiastically lied that the power supply connection has been fixed by a group of engineers who entered Ukraine via Belarus. This claim was defied by the Ukrainian and IAEA officials stating that the connection is still not fixed.
On Friday the Ukrainian government mentioned that the communication to the Chernobyl site has been cut off from the surveillance of the IAEA systems and that exactly after 48 hours of the power cut the diesel generators will not be helpful to the safety systems at all.
Currently, Russian forces have seized the plant and denied access to Ukrainian technicians to enter the station. Ukraine’s defence ministry claims that the engineers who came from Belarus were not qualified ones but came in an alibi of nuclear scientists to plan a terrorist attack as per Putin’s plan. and later would blame it on Ukrainian workers. And there is no contact between the Ukrainian government and the Chernobyl site.
Should the cooling systems at Chernobyl fail and the nuclear core were to melt down the radioactive material could enter the Earth’s surface and into the water connections and the expanse of the disaster will be that of an ecological disaster feared Ukrainian Government.
