The European Super League which involves clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Athletico Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea was once originally launched last year and written off with the popular sentiment of denial from football fans all over the world. Now reports by FourFourTwo suggest that it is set for another re-launch.
While rumours around the pitch about the founders’ sentiment about the league are forward and positive, the UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin, has said that he is tired of addressing plans about a European Super League and referred to the ESL as ‘nonsense’. He has also condemned Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus regarding their plans of bringing back the European Super League ‘in the middle of the war’ and accused the rebel clubs of plotting against UEFA amind the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis.
“Look, they first launched their nonsense of an idea in the middle of a pandemic, then they launch another in the middle of the war, they live in a parallel world”, Ceferin told the Financial Times Business of Football Summit in London via video link on Thursday. He also admitted that teams can feel free to create their competitions, but once they do they can’t participate in UEFA competitions.
Ceferin and UEFA worked with the Ukraine Football Federation to evacuate the Brazilian footballers from Kyiv. “While we are saving players together with other stakeholders, while we are working to help in a terrible situation, they work on a project like that”, he added. While Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, former head of the European Clubs Association has not given up hope of a breakaway league along with other football club heads, the La Liga chief, Javier Tebas has clapped back at the clubs at the centre of the relaunch saying, ” they lie more than Putin!”, and once again, the ESL is up for talks this season.
