On Wednesday, the Ukrainian Embassy in Japan posted on Twitter looking for volunteers to join their fight against Russia. It said it was looking for volunteers from varied backgrounds like firefighting, communications, IT, medical. whether it was posted for positions based out of Ukraine or remote was unclear.

Scores of Japanese men have responded to that Twitter post till now, willing to volunteer alongside Ukrainian soldiers. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy on Sunday urged to form an ‘international legion’ which made US and Canadian citizens respond to volunteering efforts.

According to Mainichi Shimbun daily, up to 70 Japanese men which include former members of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, 2 veterans of the French Foreign Legion have responded to the call for volunteers. This news was stated by a Tokyo-based firm that is currently looking after the volunteers.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Japan confirmed getting several calls from people willing to join the fight against Russia along with the Ukrainian military and armed forces.

However, the ministry of foreign affairs in a news conference in Japan has issued a directorate to halt any outgoing passengers to Ukraine. And has increased their efforts to evacuate any Japanese stuck in Ukraine.
