US Secretary of State Antony Blinken asks on Tuesday whether Russia is worthy to continue as a member of the UN Human Rights Council following its attack on Ukraine.
“One can reasonably questions whether a UN member state that attempts to take over another UN member state, while engaging in dreadful human rights abuses and resulting in enormous humanitarian suffering, should be authorized to remain on this council,” he inquired in a video address to the UN’s top human rights body in Geneva.
Earlier, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had also said the words that Russia should be removed from its seat at the United Nations Security Council after its action in Ukraine.
In his speech, Blinken also noted that the conference’s urgent debate on Ukraine slated for Thursday, where a resolution brought by Kyiv and allies would prep an international probe into offences, is an “important step toward ensuring documentation and accountability”. The step from America came as Ukraine continues to swirl for the sixth day under the invasion of Russian army.
