The Trump administration and its failure in dealing with pandemic have come under a lot of fire and with time the administration’s ineptness has only peaked new lows. It is perhaps a reimbursement to the lost time and missteps that have been taken, that, the country has now decided to buy out almost the entire stock of Remdesivir, a life-saving drug, patented by American Pharma giant, Gilead Sciences. The amount of drug that is reported to have been purchased by the US is said to leave almost nothing for the rest of the world that, as a matter of fact, is also reeling under the effects of the same pandemic. A stock that could have lasted for, or was meant for a period of 3 months, nearly 90% of its only existing stock has now been transferred to the states.
This step is also a reflection of the style of functioning of Donald Trump himself, as his fixation over another drug, namely, Hydroxychloroquine, which at that point had been touted as a virtual panacea to the illness by various optimists, resulted in the tumultuous rise in its demand. A series of events came to pass following trump’s claims and endorsements, wherein at the beginning, the administration almost threatened India, the largest supplier of the drug to provide it with the cheap medicine.
Although, many pieces of research have come with multiple results, the aforementioned drug, certainly was not worth all the pill-popping that Trump is said to have done. Nevertheless, there are only 9 pharma companies, that are licensed to produce Remdesivir, for the purpose of export to poorer countries, these projects are only in their early days, which in turn would impact those countries, as there would not be anything left for them to obtain.
This perhaps is the continuation of the exhibition of the blemished emergency medical system in the country, as one after the other, there have been multiple instances of collectively administrative floundering that have come to pass in the past few months, from the individual state’s race early on against each other to procure PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) kits to inability to formulate a uniform silver bullet to the growing crisis.
