The excitement is always palpable when it comes to IPL. It is a very entertaining prospect to which Indian Cricket fans and fans around the world, look up to every year. The fast-paced T20 action gets to players as much it does to the fans, as a result of which, every year more and more players appear from domestic circuits all around the world to participate in what can be described as one of the biggest T20 leagues in the world.
Now, since a team can only have 11 players on the field and a limited number of players on the bench too, there’s a large number of players who miss out on the golden opportunity to get drafted. Not only that, it was seen in the previous season of IPL, that players like Alex Carey, David Miller, Steven Smith, Ajinkya Rahane, and many others were warming the bench. This sparked the flame of having more teams in the tournament once again. The commentators were buzzing about it on air, and so it got to the fans and the IPL committee who decided to introduce 2 new teams in the coming season.
To support their decision, the IPL committee has announced that there will be a mega auction towards the end of this year, or in the early phase of 2022. Before that, however, the committee is going to announce two new teams for the next edition of the tournament. There has been no confirmation about which two teams will be making their debut next season. Notably, this is not the first time that IPL will be having new teams. This phenomenon has been tested in the tournament before. In the 4th edition of the tournament, there were two additional teams in the form of Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Their contracts however were terminated in the following year itself as they had failed to pay the agreed bank guarantees to IPL.
Since then the tournament has grown exponentially, both in the financial sector as well the viewership sector. Also, the management has learnt several lessons from the past. As a result of which, the viewers will get to see two new teams next year. The names of the two teams are set to be revealed on the 25th of October.
