On Saturday, an earthquake of 4.1 intensity (as per the Richter scale) hit Gujarat’s Kutch district with its epicentre situated near Dholavira, the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) averred.

No damage to property or casualty was reported due to the moderate-intensity earthquake, officials of the district administration added.

“A 4.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 12.08 pm on Saturday with its epicentre 23 km East-Southeast (ESE) of Dholavira in Kutch. It was recorded at a depth of 6.1 km,” the Gandhinagar-based institute said.

Kutch district in Gujarat is situated in a “very high-risk seismic zone,” according to the state disaster management authority. This region had experienced earthquakes since 2001. Kutch is a remote area amidst the arid borderlands of the northwest region of India. After the devastating earthquake struck the region, it made life intensely touch for centuries. The 2001 disaster affected the district capital, Bhuj, and also demolished over 8,000 villages. Nearly twenty thousand people were killed while more than one million got homeless.

To restructure the entire area, the Indian Government created special tax-free zones. This gave a kickstart to the private sector investment amongst the mass. However, the success of reconstructing the region couldn’t have been possible without recovering the economic sphere of Gujarat as a whole.
