Kolkata Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan is likely to lead the team when IPL 2021 returns in the United Arab Emirates.
This year’s tournament was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic and then moved to the UAE to be completed.
The postponement has left question marks over which overseas stars will make the rescheduled contest, even though no quarantine rules will apply.
Morgan is one name now likely to make the trip after England’s planned September tour of Bangladesh was called off until March 2023.
That gap opening up means England players should now feature if they wish. Some later IPL play-off matches and the IPL 2021 Final may still prove an issue as it currently classes with England’s T20I series with Pakistan.
However, it will take a big change in fortune for Kolkata and Morgan to make it that far.
They currently sit second from bottom in the IPL standings with just two wins to their name. They would need to win at least five of their remaining seven matches to have any chance of gatecrashing the play-off party.
This is highlighted by their price of 15.0 with Betway and other sites for online cricket betting.
Morgan believes playing in the IPL instead of Bangladesh with England will be just as good preparation for the upcoming T20 World.
He also said it would be up to individuals to decide if they follow him to the IPL for the Dubai restart on September 19.
Speaking after a recent The Hundred contest, he said: “I think it was a win-win either way. If we went to Bangladesh we’d play in conditions that are foreign to us.
“If some guys go to the IPL, they’ll play in similar conditions [to the World Cup] or for guys that need a rest, they take a rest.
“We’ve a lot of cricket to play between now and then. We’ve planned on the tour going ahead – that’s been part of our planning for a long time now – but equally, given the nature in which we now compete and live our lives, it’s not a bad thing for guys to either take time off or go to the IPL if they feel refreshed and have enough energy.”
When the 2021 Indian Premier League does resume, there are still plenty of games to be played. A total of 31 games will be packed in to 27 days and three venues.
