Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday revealed his reason for fleeing the country in the midst of chaos. Ghani wrote on Facebook that he left the country to avoid clashes with the Taliban which would result in bloodshed.

“The Taliban had made it clear that they were ready to carry out bloody attacks on all of Kabul and the people of Kabul Sharif. To prevent a flood of bloodshed, I decided to leave,” he wrote on Facebook.

He also said that the Taliban won because of swords and guns and not because of compassion. “The Taliban have won the sword and gun judgment and are now responsible for the honour, property, and self-protection of their compatriots. The legitimacy of hearts did not win them over. They are now facing a new historical test,” he said.

Ghani did not reveal his current location. On Sunday it was reported that he had left the country for Tajikistan. According to news channel Al Jazeera, Ghani and his family along with his chief of staff and national security advisor went to Tashkent in Uzbekistan.

On Sunday, the Taliban entered Kabul, the capital city without any fight. Abdul Sattar Mirzakawal, the acting interior minister said in a tweet that “There won’t be an attack on the city, it is agreed that there will be a peaceful handover.”
