Bianca Andreescu, the highest-ranked Canadian in the record of the Women’s Tennis Association pulls out of Tokyo Olympics.
Andreescu has concluded to not compete at the Tokyo Olympics due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Stan Wawrinka, Nick Kyrgios, Serena Williams and Simona Halep, all these huge names had already declared before that they won’t be participating in the Olympics that was halted due to the pandemic situation.
“I would like to inform you that I have made the very difficult decision to not play in the Tokyo Olympics later this month,” announced the player through Instagram.
“I have been dreaming of representing Canada at the Olympics since I was a little girl, but with all the challenges we are facing as it relates to the pandemic, I know that deep in my heart, this is the right decision to make for myself,” added Andreescu via her post.
She is looking forward to defining her nation later in the coming year’s events and said: “I look forward to representing Canada in future Fed Cup ties, and competing at the 2024 Olympics in Paris”.
The former US Open Champion last contended at Wimbledon where she failed in the first round. She evolved Canada’s first Grand Slam singles champion after her victory at the US Open tournament in 2019.
