The Spain striker’s incredible goal in the Euro 2020 semi-final at Wembley kept his team’s dreams alive. Alvaro Morata made history as he scored a thrilling late equaliser against Italy, surpassing Fernando Torres and tying Cristiano Ronaldo for the most Euros goals.

Morata scored in the 80th minute of Tuesday’s Euro 2020 semi-final against Italy, with the Azzurri leading 1-0 thanks to Federico Chiesa’s strike. Morata, though, concluded a magnificent move with a brilliant finish after receiving a pass from Dani Olmo, making history while also dragging the game to extra time.

His goal not only kept Spain’s Euro ambitions alive in the match, but it also saw the oft-criticized Morata move past Fernando Torres. Morata scored his sixth goal at the Euros surpassing Torres, who had previously been Spain’s highest scorer at the competition with five goals.

Alvaro Morata also joined Cristiano Ronaldo as the second player in history to score three or more goals in three different Euros competitions. Morata also became the first Spanish player to score for both club and country at Wembley Stadium, despite not starting on Tuesday.

Morata’s night didn’t end well, though, as he missed a crucial penalty attempt in a shootout that allowed Italy to advance to the final on penalties. Throughout the tournament, Morata has been the target of a barrage of criticism, much of it has been directed at him inappropriately.

During the group stage, the striker said he and his family received death threats, and he couldn’t sleep after witnessing people declare they wanted his children to die because of his performances for Spain.
However, Morata’s goal on Tuesday was his third of the tournament, following goals against Poland and Croatia.
