The Sinclair family is heading back to Beechwood Island, but this time, we’re diving into the ghosts of the past. Following the massive success of the first season, which premiered on June 18, 2025, Prime Video officially renewed the psychological thriller for a second season in September 2025.

As of May 8, 2026, major casting news has just broken, confirming that the new season will serve as both a sequel and a prequel, adapting E. Lockhart’s follow-up novel, Family of Liars.

We Were Liars Season 2 Release Date Speculation

While an official date hasn’t been set, the production timeline is becoming clear:

  • Production Status: Filming is scheduled to begin this Summer 2026 in Nova Scotia.

  • Projected Release: Early 2027.

  • The Timeline: Given the post-production requirements for the show’s atmospheric visuals, a launch in the first quarter of 2027 is the most likely target for Prime Video.

Season 2 Cast Updates: Meet the Young Sinclairs

Because Season 2 leans heavily into the “Summer of 1999,” the production has just announced (as of May 7, 2026) a slate of new actors to play the younger versions of the Sinclair family.

The 1999 Timeline (New Cast):

  • Josh Dallas (Manifest): Joins as Young Harris Sinclair (originally played by David Morse).

  • Peyton List (Cobra Kai): Joins as Young Tipper Taft Sinclair (originally played by Wendy Crewson).

  • Parker Lapaine: Cast as Young Carrie Sinclair (Mamie Gummer’s character).

  • Elysia Roorbach: Cast as Young Penny Sinclair (Caitlin FitzGerald’s character).

  • Madison Wolfe: Cast as Young Bess Sinclair (Candice King’s character).

  • Costa D’Angelo: Joins as Pfeff, a mysterious and “wounded” college student who upends the sisters’ lives.

The Present Day (Returning Cast):

  • Emily Alyn Lind is confirmed to return as Cadence Sinclair.

  • Dempsey Bryk, who played Ebon in Season 1, has been upped to a series regular, suggesting a larger role in Cadence’s ongoing journey.

  • Despite the events of the Season 1 finale, showrunners have hinted that the “original Liars”—Joseph Zada (Johnny), Shubham Maheshwari (Gat), and Esther McGregor (Mirren)—may still appear in some capacity, as the show explores the “ghosts” that haunt Beechwood.

Plot Details: Confronting the “Truth”

Season 2 will interweave two primary narratives: Cadence’s continued recovery in the present and the origin of the Sinclair sisters’ trauma in 1999.

  • The Prequel (1999): Based on Family of Liars, this storyline follows the three Sinclair sisters (Carrie, Penny, and Bess) during a fateful summer rife with first loves, intense rivalries, and a “family crisis” that leads to a murder. It will explain the rigid, secretive culture that Cadence eventually inherited.

  • The Sequel (Present Day): Cadence returns to Beechwood Island to “confront her truth.” As she digs deeper into the family archives, she realizes that the tragedy she experienced as a teen was not the first time the island saw blood.

  • New Twists: Showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie have stated that while they are following the prequel book, they are adding “new stories” for the present-day cast to ensure that fans of the novels are still surprised by the TV adaptation.

As of today, May 8, 2026, We Were Liars remains a top performer on Prime Video. With production starting this summer, fans can expect the first “Summer at Beechwood” teasers to drop toward the end of the year.
