Vicki Gunvalson, known as the OG of The Real Housewives of Orange County, is reflecting on her time with the Bravo franchise in a new interview. The reality star recently shared on The Dark Side of Reality TV that joining RHOC felt like “a deal with the devil.” Starting on the show in 2006, Gunvalson said she had little idea of what lay ahead, signing on without even consulting a lawyer. “I didn’t even get paid for season one and barely anything for season two,” she recalled, noting that her initial salary was as low as $5,000.
Though Gunvalson eventually earned a substantial income, rising to seven figures by her final full-time season, the reality of fame came with significant personal challenges. Her high-profile journey on *RHOC* took a toll on her marriage to Donn Gunvalson, leading to their divorce in 2014. “With Donn, 100%, the show had an impact on our relationship,” Vicki shared, adding, “If I wasn’t on the show, I think we would’ve survived.”
Gunvalson’s divorce wasn’t her only struggle. The reality of living life in the spotlight often collided with private moments, including her mother’s passing, which occurred while filming. Vicki explained that production insisted on capturing the moment she learned the news, setting up cameras to record her reaction without warning. “They were out of line, and I think they should have taken me aside,” she said, expressing disappointment with Bravo’s decision to film such a traumatic moment.
A complicated legacy
Despite these moments, Gunvalson continues to make guest appearances on *RHOC*, including in the current season. She acknowledges the show brought her fame and success, but also hints at the long-term consequences of opening her life to millions. “People ask if I regret doing the show, and when I look at my relationships, I’d say yes,” she admitted.
As she revisits the highs and lows of her reality TV experience, Gunvalson’s reflections serve as a cautionary tale for those considering life in the public eye. While her legacy as one of the first Real Housewives remains, the cost, as she describes, has been “a deal with the devil” she won’t soon forget.
