As President Donald Trump considers new options that would completely change America’s relationship with the conflict in the Middle East, the U.S.-backed military effort against Iran has continued for almost four weeks.

The U.S.-Israel attacks on February 28, 2026, which began this war, have been focused on the Iranian leadership, missile bases, and infrastructure. Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes throughout the region, resulting in approximately 2,000 deaths, and could disrupt the flow of oil to world markets through the Strait of Hormuz.

There are also questions related to whether or not there are ongoing direct discussions taking place between Trump and Iran. Trump continuously discusses that there are very positive and productive talks taking place about resolving this situation entirely and completely with Iran. However, Iranian officials state that those conversations are not actual negotiations and characterise them as “fake news,” but they do acknowledge receiving some messages indirectly through third parties. The Prime Minister of Pakistan has offered to facilitate a dialogue between Trump and Iran.

Iran’s power plants would be hit by an airstrike by President Donald Trump if Tehran tries to blockade shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The strike was postponed for five days while negotiations proceeded. Iran has threatened to retaliate against any offensive act against its infrastructure, with a direct threat to close the Strait of Hormuz completely.

One of the major fears held by the American public is the deployment of “boots on the ground” by the U.S. government. President Trump has not ruled this out and has stated he does not have the same apprehension regarding deploying troops that past presidents have. The Pentagon has ordered a Marine Expeditionary Unit to the area, with thousands of troops expected to arrive. There are tentative preparations for ground troops to be used, including elements of the 82nd Airborne Division. However, Pentagon officials have stressed these movements could solely be for support of operations or security of key locations such as oil facilities, rather than indicating a full-scale invasion.

A theory being discussed by U.S. officials regarding Iran’s increased stockpile of munitions is the result of a decrease in Iranian attacks, indicating a depletion of munitions. However, Tehran continues to issue threats.

There is uncertainty regarding the current situation, with many risks relating to U.S. service member safety, energy costs, and stability in the region if further escalation occurs. President Trump has indicated he hopes for a peaceful resolution through negotiations, while at the same time, there are continued military preparations as a hedge against a lack of resolution. American citizens are concerned and wary right now.
