The Carolina Panthers are approaching an important decision at quarterback as their season comes to a close.
That decision centers on whether to exercise the fifth year option on Bryce Young’s rookie contract. Based on current reporting, the move appears straightforward.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Panthers are expected to pick up Young’s option this offseason. Doing so would keep him under contract through at least the 2027 season.
Schefter noted that the decision is considered routine for a former No. 1 overall pick.
Over The Cap projects the fifth year option will be valued at $26.5 million.
The move aligns with league trends. No quarterback selected first overall since 2011 has had his fifth year option declined.
While the option is expected to be exercised, a long term extension is far from guaranteed.
Young’s performance has been uneven. After finishing the 2024 season strongly, he struggled with consistency throughout this year. At times, he has shown signs of being a franchise quarterback. At other moments, he has failed to sustain that level of play.
The Panthers reached the playoffs, which strengthens Young’s standing within the organization. A postseason win or two could further solidify his case.
At this point, Carolina is not expected to rush into a contract extension. The team is more likely to allow Young to play at least one additional season before making a final decision on his long term future.
