The Cleveland Browns have been searching for a new head coach for several weeks. They are looking for a replacement for Kevin Stefanski and have interviewed about a dozen candidates so far. One of those candidates is Nate Scheelhaase, the Los Angeles Rams passing-game coordinator.
USA TODAY’s Jacob Camenker predicts Scheelhaase could get the Browns’ job. Scheelhaase is in his first season as the Rams’ passing-game coordinator. He helped quarterback Matthew Stafford have an MVP-level year. Stafford completed 65% of his passes for 4,707 yards, threw 46 touchdowns, and had only eight interceptions.
Camenker says the Browns could see similar results under Scheelhaase, especially as the team continues to search for a franchise quarterback. Scheelhaase has experience with quarterbacks of his own. He was a four-year starter at Illinois from 2010 to 2013 and worked six seasons on Matt Campbell’s staff at Iowa State before joining the NFL.
The Browns have already interviewed Scheelhaase and are reportedly considering a second interview. That shows he has a strong chance at the job.
Scheelhaase is considered a rising star in the league. He joined the Rams in 2024 as an offensive assistant and passing-game specialist. He was promoted to his current role in 2025. That season, the Rams’ passing attack ranked first in the NFL. In 2024, it was 10th in the league. Stafford was also a finalist for the MVP award, highlighting Scheelhaase’s impact.
The main risk is that Scheelhaase has never been an offensive coordinator or a head coach. Hiring him would be a gamble. But he has a strong track record with the Rams and is a Sean McVay disciple. That makes it likely the Browns will still consider him seriously.
