Miami Beach officials have officially severed ties with Sean “Diddy” Combs, revoking his honorary Key to the City following a series of escalating legal issues, according to a report by TMZ. The decision, confirmed at a city commission meeting on Wednesday, comes nearly a decade after the rapper was first awarded the key in 2015.
Diddy, who was initially honored for his contributions to the music industry and for founding the Revolt Music Conference in Miami Beach, has recently faced numerous legal setbacks, including an arrest, an indictment, and multiple sexual assault lawsuits. The city’s decision to strip him of the ceremonial honor was unanimously supported by Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner and commissioners Joe Magazine, David Suarez, Tanya Katzoff Bhatt, and Alex Fernandez.
According to TMZ, the mayor’s final sign-off on the resolution is anticipated soon. In a similar move, Miami Beach also rescinded October 13 as “Sean Diddy Combs Day” this past June, following public backlash related to a video of an alleged assault involving singer Cassie.
Diddy’s Legal Woes
The decision follows a cascade of allegations and lawsuits against the music mogul, with several women stepping forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct and assault. Diddy was recently arrested and subsequently indicted, sparking a public outcry that has severely impacted his reputation. High-profile accusations, including claims of assault, have shaken the industry and prompted multiple cities to reconsider honorary titles they’ve awarded him.
In one particularly notable incident, a video involving singer Cassie surfaced, leading to Miami Beach’s earlier decision to rescind “Sean Diddy Combs Day,” which had been celebrated each year on October 13 since it was first declared. TMZ reports that Miami Beach city officials viewed the allegations and video as incongruent with the values the city seeks to represent.
This isn’t the first time Diddy has faced such a symbolic loss. As TMZ reported, he returned his honorary Key to the City of New York in June after Mayor Eric Adams formally requested it in a letter.
