Kate Beckinsale has stepped into the legal spotlight with a serious lawsuit against Canary Black producer John Zois and the production company Anton Entertainment Media Services, Inc., accusing them of negligence, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The case, which had initially been filed discreetly under the pseudonym “Jane Doe” in December 2024, was later amended in May 2025 to fully disclose the parties involved and the extent of Beckinsale’s injuries and treatment on set. This legal action centers on her experience while filming the action-thriller Canary Black, directed by Pierre Morel and released on October 3, 2024.
According to Beckinsale’s legal team, the problems began in December 2022 when she suffered a complex meniscus tear in her left knee during stunt work. After undergoing surgery, her physician, Dr. Jason Snibbe, imposed strict limitations that barred her from engaging in physically strenuous activities such as running, squatting, or performing suspended stunts. However, Beckinsale claims that despite these clear medical instructions, the producers forced her back into intense action scenes without adjustments, preparation, or proper medical support.
The complaint details how she endured long 15-hour workdays with late stunt briefings and no adequate time for recovery. Her team raised multiple concerns about the safety of the working conditions, highlighting issues like the absence of detailed recovery protocols and an alarming lack of communication about stunt expectations. A striking example came when her agent, Shani Rosenzweig, warned Zois in an email, “If you’re trying to kill a person, you’re doing a great job.” Although Zois acknowledged the warning, the unsafe circumstances reportedly remained unchanged.
As a result of these alleged oversights, Beckinsale’s injury is said to have significantly worsened, with further damage that might have been avoided had the production followed medical advice. Her attorneys, Marty Singer and Brian Panish, argue that the producers knowingly jeopardized her health in favor of keeping the production schedule and budget intact. This lawsuit underscores the continuing tension in Hollywood between performer safety and the high-pressure demands of blockbuster filmmaking. As of now, neither Beckinsale nor Zois has issued a public statement regarding the ongoing case.
