Florida coach Jon Sumrall expected a simple offseason photo shoot inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Instead, he ended up standing just a few feet away from a massive alligator.
The moment quickly turned into one of the most talked about offseason stories around the Florida program.
Sumrall recently arrived at Florida and is still learning what life around The Swamp is like. One thing he clearly did not expect was meeting a real seven foot gator during a promotional shoot.
The alligator, named Helena, was brought to the stadium from a nearby farm. What was supposed to be a fun marketing moment suddenly became a nerve racking experience for the new coach.

Sumrall later explained that he had no idea the alligator would be part of the shoot. In fact, the first time he even heard about it was from his wife.
She learned about the plan from someone inside the program before he did.
Sumrall said she casually told him he would be seeing an alligator the next day. At first he thought she was joking.
He also assumed the animal would be a small one.
But when he arrived, he was introduced to Helena. The gator was around seven feet long and looked huge on the ground.
Sumrall immediately started asking questions. He wanted to know exactly how big the animal was and how close he was expected to stand.

The photo shoot itself stayed under control. Still, there was one moment that made Sumrall step back.
Video shared by the Florida football program showed Helena suddenly snapping her head and hissing toward the coach.
That quick movement was enough to make the situation feel very real.
Sumrall later admitted that the moment made him think twice. The gator clearly wanted to remind everyone who was in charge.
He joked that the animal basically told him not to mess around.

Despite the scare, Sumrall did not walk away angry. Instead, he described the moment as both humbling and impressive.
Seeing a powerful animal like that up close gave him a new respect for Florida’s famous mascot tradition.
Some fans even joked that Helena should appear on the sidelines during games. Others suggested letting the gator crawl to midfield before kickoff to fire up the crowd.
That idea may never happen. But one thing is clear.
Jon Sumrall will probably never forget his first close encounter with a Florida Gator inside The Swamp.
