The San Francisco Giants have already turned heads this season with a blockbuster move for Rafael Devers. But could they be planning another stunning trade before the MLB deadline? According to Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer, the Giants might set their sights on Baltimore Orioles star catcher Adley Rutschman.
Rutschman, the former No. 1 overall pick, has struggled with injuries this season, raising questions about his long-term future in Baltimore. At the same time, the Orioles have promising young catching talent coming up fast in the minors, particularly Samuel Basallo and recently drafted Ike Irish. With these players waiting in the wings, Rutschman might just be a little more “moveable” than before.
Rymer believes that while trading for Rutschman is certainly a long shot, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. He points out that the 27-year-old catcher has not been performing at his usual offensive level and that Baltimore might consider a bold move if they feel their future is already secure with their up-and-coming prospects. Of course, this would only become realistic if Rutschman returns from his current oblique strain and shows strong form before the July 31 trade deadline.
For the Giants, however, the interest makes perfect sense. President of baseball operations Buster Posey is known for targeting big-name players, and Rutschman could be a huge solution for the team’s struggles behind the plate. The Giants’ current catchers have combined for a league-worst .555 OPS, making Rutschman’s potential arrival a game-changer.
While Rymer admits this deal is “a long shot,” he also describes it as being in the sweet spot between “interesting” and “just plausible enough” to keep fans buzzing. After all, catching talent of Rutschman’s calibre doesn’t become available often, and Posey, being a legendary catcher himself, understands the value of having a strong presence behind the plate.
The Giants are looking for ways to ignite a second-half playoff push, and adding Rutschman could be exactly the kind of spark they need. The team knows that success in the postseason often starts with elite defence and leadership at the catcher position. Posey, more than anyone, knows the importance of having a reliable and game-changing presence behind the dish.
Is it likely? Maybe not. But if Rutschman makes a strong comeback and Baltimore is willing to listen to offers, the Giants could easily emerge as one of the most aggressive suitors.
