California Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump, challenging his use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada. Filed in a San Francisco federal court, the suit argues Trump’s reliance on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) is unconstitutional and causing “irreparable harm” to California’s economy.
“President Trump’s unlawful tariffs are wreaking chaos on California families, businesses, and our economy — driving up prices and threatening jobs,” Newsom said. The state is seeking an immediate court order to block the levies.
Trump became the first president to use the IEEPA for tariffs, a law traditionally reserved for national security sanctions. The move has triggered market volatility and legal backlash. At least three other lawsuits are already challenging the tariffs, while the Justice Department seeks to shift these cases to the Court of International Trade.
