The Golden Bachelor season 2 kicked off with plenty of drama on September 24, 2025. Mel Owens, the 66-year-old retired NFL linebacker turned attorney, started his journey to find love after his long marriage with Fabiana Pimentel Owens ended. Now, he’s ready to try again and meet his match among 23 bachelorettes.

The premiere got tense quickly because of some past comments Mel had made about the type of women he prefers. He had said on a podcast that he likes women between 45 and 60, cutting anyone older, and added he wanted women who are fit and don’t have “artificial hips and wigs.” Fans criticized the remarks as ageist, and several contestants didn’t hold back.

During the one-on-one introductions, the women confronted Mel directly. Diane, a 71-year-old librarian and hockey player, jokingly asked what his podcast interview was about. Carla, a 62-year-old former model, said she was there to break all of his stereotypes about women over 60.

The funniest moment came from Terri, a 71-year-old cosmetic dentist, who brought a hand puppet named Carly. The puppet playfully slapped Mel and scolded him “for all women over 60,” even asking if he was surprised the contestants were that attractive. Mel took it in stride, saying he had never experienced anything like that before and found it fun.

Mel Owens also made a heartfelt apology, both to the group and individually. He admitted his comments were insensitive and unfair, saying age is just a number and spirit has no age. The women seemed to accept his apology, noting he owned up to his mistake upfront. Mel expressed gratitude for being part of the show and hoped to earn back their trust. He said, “It’s truly a privilege for me to be the Golden Bachelor. And I hope you can forgive me and let me earn it back.”
