Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, following Trump’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Zelenskyy revealed that he had a long and meaningful conversation with Trump on Saturday, shortly after the US leader met Putin. The Alaska summit ended without an agreement to stop the war in Ukraine, despite high expectations and intense global focus.
Putin later claimed that he and Trump had reached an “understanding” on Ukraine, while warning Europe not to undermine what he described as early progress. But Trump dismissed that suggestion, telling Fox News before leaving Alaska, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal.” He added that going forward, the responsibility might fall more on Zelenskyy to reach an agreement, though European nations would also have a role to play.
Trump did not speak to reporters during his flight back to Washington, but White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said he had spent time on calls with NATO leaders after holding a lengthy phone conversation with Zelenskyy.
So far, there has been no official response from European leaders or from Zelenskyy’s office regarding Trump’s remarks or Putin’s claims.
