Kathryn Hahn is stepping into the spotlight with her first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series, and she’s drawing inspiration from some of her favorite films, including the Kate Winslet-led drama Mare of Easttown. In her new show Agatha All Along, Hahn’s character, Agatha Harkness, finds herself in a Mare of Easttown-inspired narrative within the magical world of Marvel.

In Agatha All Along, Hahn’s character is trapped in a spell and ends up in a crime drama twist called Agnes of Westview, where she takes cues from Winslet’s detective Mare Sheehan. Hahn confessed to The Hollywood Reporter, “I had binged Mare of Easttown when it came out, and I was obsessed with it. So Agnes of Westview was definitely a love letter to that genre of show.”

The spin-off series centers on Agatha Harkness, who, with the help of a teen, breaks free from her spell. As she explores the trials to regain her powers, she also seeks to uncover the teen’s true intentions. Originally introduced in WandaVision, Agatha has become a central character in her own right, and now she’s taking the lead in her own show.

Hahn shared her surprise and excitement at landing this role, saying, “I never would have seen this in my future. I thought it was something that I wouldn’t find myself in.” She was thrilled to break new ground with her role as a witch in the MCU, admitting, “I was so excited. I was just giddy. And Agatha really is always the main character in her mind.”

She also mentioned that it felt “weirdly natural” for Agatha to evolve from a solitary witch to one who needs a coven despite her personal feelings.

The first two episodes of Agatha All Along are now streaming on Disney+, with new episodes set to debut on October 30.
