Republican Governor Mike DeWine vetoed a measure that would have banned gender affirming care for minors and transgender athletes’ participation in girls and women’s sports, in a break from members from his party who championed the legislation.

GOP lawmakers hold enough seats to override DeWine’s veto, but if or when they would do so was not immediately clear. Both between and within the chambers, Republican legislators have not been in lockstep this year.

Later, in a news conference, DeWine listened to the both the sides of the legislation who claimed to believe their position best protects children.

He asserted that the bill would only affect a small number of children in Ohio, however, for those children who face gender dysphoria and for their families, the consequences of this bill would be much more profound.

DeWine also suggested a three-pong approach as he claimed to believe that there were adminstrative measures that could address the main concerns of the bill.
