Ohio GOP lawmakers appeal to block court from interpreting new abortion amendment

It has been proposed by several Republican lawmakers in from Ohio to strip courts of the authority to review cases related to the implementation of newly passed Issue 1 abortion amendment.

In a statement released Thursday, four GOP lawmakers, without evidence, claimed that there was “foreign election interference” in the vote to pass Issue 1, and threatened to block the ability of courts to interpret the new constitutional amendment.

The lawmakers stated in order to prevent any mischief by pro-abortion courts, Ohio legislators will consider removing jurisdiction from the judiciary over the ambiguous ballot initiative. It will also consider what modifications are required to be made, based on the public hearings and input from legal experts on both sides.

Issue 1, which was passed with 57 per cent in the state, created a constitutional right to reproductive freedom in the state, which protects decisions on contraception, continuing a pregnancy, fertility treatment, miscarriage care, and abortion up to the point of fetal viability.

However, the Republicans in the General Assembly have vowed to fight the measue.
