Firing off seven aces and not facing a breakpoint in the opening set of the clash gave Medvedev a rock-solid start where he had only five errors that were unforced and broke Auger-Aliassime’s straight point serves in the seventh game.
The World Number 2 has lost just one set in the six rounds at the US Open and has his eyes set to lift the title for the first time since facing defeat to Rafa Nadal where he lost in five sets two years ago.
The Russian has now made his third consecutive trip to the US Open semifinal. He finished as a runner up at Flushing Medows against Rafa Nadal in 2019 and at Melbourne Park against Djokovic whom he will be facing in the upcoming Grand Slam final for the US Open title.
In the second set down a break, Medvedev looked to be in trouble but seemed to be not losing hope as Auger-Aliassime failed twice to clinch a set point in the ninth game.
“Second set defined the match because I was really close to lose it,” said Medvedev as reported by Reuters after his win. “It turned the match around. I think he started doubting,” he added
“Against a player like that, you don’t really have room for mistakes, room for losing your focus, which I did at the end of the second,” said Auger-Aliassime after the semifinal bout.
This was the first Grand Slam semifinal for Auger-Aliassime at the age of 21. Earlier this year he had reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals and since being considered among the brightest young stars of the sport.
Daniil Medvedev’s scheduled Grand Slam final against Novak Djokovic is to be played on the 13th of September 2021 (Monday).
