On Tuesday, Serena Williams made her return to tennis after a year away, partnering with Ons Jabeur in the Eastbourne International doubles.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, was competing for the first time since her heartbreaking Wimbledon loss last year. The 40-year-old was injured in her first-round encounter against Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon and hasn’t been seen on the court since.
Williams and Tunisia’s Jabeur, who is ranked third in the WTA singles rankings, played Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo and the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova. The American received a rousing reception from the crowd when she went onto the court in the early evening sunshine after such a long absence. Rumours about Williams’ retirement had been circulating for months before she made the surprise announcement of her probable return last week. But, with Wimbledon starting on June 27, Williams resurrected her career, teaming up with Jabeur at a Sussex coastal warm-up event.
