Indian tennis greats Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi indicated something special on account of their 22nd anniversary of the Wimbledon victory in the men’s doubles classification through a Twitter conversation on Sunday.
Bhupathi and Paes became the first Indian pair who won at the Wimbledon tournament on this very day of the year 1999. They had also gained a victory over French Open in the same year. It was the first time to reach such a level when the legendary duo reached the finals of all four Grand Slams in 1999 and achieved the position of becoming the first doubles team to do so in the Open Era since 1952.
“22 years ago today, we became the first Indians to win Wimbledon. As two young boys all, we dreamt of was making our country proud,” wrote Paes via Twitter on Sunday about the accomplishment mentioning Bhupathi.
