Jiri Vesely upsets Novak Djokovic, Serb to lose No.1 ranking

Novak Djokovic gets defeated at the Dubai Championship quarterfinals to lose his World No. 1 ranking. Medvedev to be new No. 1.

Novak Djokovic, after skipping the first Grand Slam of the tournament following vaccination mandate was appearing at his first tournament of the year. The Serb got defeated by the Czech professional Jiri Vesely with a score of 6-4, 7-6(4) at the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Following the defeat, the 20 times Grand Slam champion will lose his No. 1 ranking on Monday for the first time since January 2020 and he will be replaced by Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Djokovic was sent back from Melbourne after his VISA got cancelled twice following a vaccination controversial document because of which he was not able to defend his 21st Grand Slam title. The title was later won by Spaniard Rafael Nadal to become the only man in tennis history with 21 Grand Slams surpassing him and Roger Federer.

The Serbian is set to skip upcoming Grand Slams as well namely French Open and Wimbledon if forced to get vaccinated as he believes, it’s one “right to choose”. He also cleared that he is not against vaccination, but will do what is good for his body.
