Australian Open 2022: Petra Kvitova crashes out in the first round

Kvitova suffers a heavy loss to Sorana Cirstea(6-2 6-2) in the first round of the Australian Open.

Two times former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was unsurprised at bowing out of the Australian Open in the first round on Tuesday after a difficult month down under.

The 2019 Australian Open was outclassed by Romania’s Sorana Cirstea for the second consecutive year at Melbourne Park, the Romanian veteran cruised to a 6-2 6-2 on John Cain Arena, She looked a bit rusty and was not in a position to fight for the match in the first round against Ciresta who simply dominated the match and emerged as the winner of the tie.

“I don’t think I have much to say, It wasn’t really going my way the whole month. That’s how it is. It’s a sport and I just have to fight through and be better at it,” said Petra Kvitova after her early exit in the Australian Open as Hindustan Times reports.

The 31-year-old opened her 2022 campaign with a shocking loss to Australian Priscilla Hon who is world number 221 in the first round of the Adelaide International.

She then went on to the Sydney Tennis classic and survived to get her the first win of the year when she played Arantxa Rus in the first round and eventually got out in the second round by Ons Jabeur.

The veteran who lost to Naomi Osaka in the final three years ago had to enter two warm-up tournaments but only could play three matches after an early exit in Adelaide and Sydney. She had some health issues in the last month which made practice even tougher but the season is long and she can come back strongly.
