ATP Cup 2021: Novak Djokovic makes a perfect start with a win over Denis Shapovalov

The World No 1 Novak Djokovic won two matches for Serbia on day one of the ATP Cup 2021 on Tuesday. With the two wins, Djokovic now has a perfect 10 at ATP Cups.

First, the World No.1 defeated Canada’s Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 7-5 before playing doubles with his compatriot Filip Krajinovic to win against Shapovalov and Milos Raonic.

Djokovic has won eight matches in the first edition which included six single matches as Serbia claimed the title last year. Currently, Serbia is on top of the table in Group A after their notable performance against Canada. While Canada and Germany will face-off on Wednesday, Serbs will face Alexander Zverev-led Germany on Thursday.

“Filip Krajinovic was the key,” said Djokovic. “The way he played today is phenomenal. He came out [with] very solid returning. He found his serve, great rhythm. [He] just played some really key shots in the second set when we needed it the most.”

Earlier in the day, Milos Raonic had put Canada in the lead with a victory over Dusan Lajovic in the second singles match. Djokovic sealed a win over Shapovalov to take the match to the decider in doubles.

Djokovic thanked his fans for their support after the completion of the singles match. “We don’t get to see crowds in the tennis stadiums these days so much, so it’s definitely a blessing. I’m really grateful to see you guys here in the stands,” said the 33-year-old Tennis star.

“It was a very close match. Playing Shapo is always a great challenge on hard courts. He’s such a dynamic, explosive player; very talented. I thought we played on a very high level, so I’m pleased with how I’ve started the season. This is the best way to kickstart the season, playing for your country,” he added.
