The final of SAFF Championship 2021, was played between India and Nepal on Saturday night. The tournament started in a very twisted manner as the title favourite India had a woeful start to their campaign while Nepal emerged as the dark horse of the season, everyone had written them off before the season but they still managed to not only beat Malaysia who was one of the favourites, but also qualified for the final.
India and Nepal had played thrice since September and had well knowledge of what they were up against. It was a very close encounter, the last time India met them in the group stage, they won the game in the dying minutes, with Chhetri providing the solitary goal of the match to help his side cross the line. Admitting the same, the Indian coach Stimac also made the same claim when he said, โNepal is a known opponent to us, as much as we are to them. We take confidence in having won the last two matches.โ

The game did not start in the manner India would have hoped it to. Although there were some close calls, Nepal managed to keep them out, until Chhetri finally found the back of the net in the 48th minute with a powerful header. More chances started opening up after that as just a minute later Suresh Singh doubled the lead for his team. From there onwards, there was no comeback for Nepal. The final nail to the coffin was provided by Sahal Abdul Samad, as he scored a brilliant solo goal in the 90th minute of the game.
