Chelsea’s sale on hold as Roman Abramovich gets banned by UK government

The UK government has frozen Roman Abramovich’s assets, hindering the selling of Chelsea.

Chelsea oligarch Roman Abramovich will now be forbidden to sell the club as the UK government froze his assets as part of a raft of financial charges.

Last week, Abramovich declared his intent to market the London-based Premier League club. Even though there is a lot of interest, the Blues’ future is now undetermined as a result of the sanctions.

Abramovich was blacklisted as a component of the British government’s sanctions targeting several high-profile Russians with connections to President Vladimir Putin, who orchestrated the recent invasion of Ukraine.

Today, the UK government (finally) penalized Roman Abramovich of being “associated with a person who is or has been involved in destabilizing Ukraine and undermining and threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, namely Vladimir Putin, with whom Abramovich has had a close relationship for decades” as mentioned in the official government statement.
Each of his UK-based assets has been frozen, including Chelsea Football Club.
Chelsea is practically in disarray, as Abramovich intended to offload the Stamford Bridge club before the fines were enforced.

Cultural secretary Nadine Dorries has confirmed that Chelsea will be granted a “special license,” enabling all football-related activities, including Thursday’s match against Norwich, to take place.

However, since the club is prohibited to sell match tickets, just season ticket holders will be fortunate enough to attend games in person. The English Government has now rendered new contracts, laver transfers, official merchandise selling for Chelsea forbidden.
