Wrestler Sumit Malik has been banned for two years by United World Wrestling

Indian wrestler Sumit Malik had been handed a two-year ban by the United World Wrestling (UWW) and has a week time to appeal. His B sample turned positive for a prohibited stimulant which is the reason why he is banned for two years. The wrestler has been given one week time to decide whether to accept the sanction or fight against it.

Malik had tested positive for the banned substance methylhexaneamine (MHA) for the campaign in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. According to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list of prohibited substances, MHA is prohibited in-competition only as a specified stimulant.

As per the WADA code when an adverse analytical finding is received for a prohibited substance or method, a provisional suspension shall be imposed properly. WFI official informed the Sportstar that, “The UWW has said that Sumit’s ‘A’ sample is positive. His ‘B’ sample is expected to be tested around June 10.”

The wrestler was tested last month in the World Olympic qualifier in Sofia, Bulgaria. Similarly, four years ago, Narsingh Yadav had failed a dope test before the Rio Olympics and was withdrawn from the Olympics after the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) handed him a four-year suspension for failing the doping test. Currently, eight Indian wrestlers, four each in men and woman freestyle, have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.
