The Tokyo Olympics are due to begin on July 23 in the Japanese capital. India will send a team of around 200 athletes to the Games and expects to win a slew of medals, with numerous strong competitors in various sports.

PV Sindhu, a badminton ace, is one of India’s main medal contenders. Due to her stellar record since winning an Olympic medal five years ago. The Hyderabad shuttler, who won silver in the 2016 Rio Games, is a favourite for a medal, if not gold. Sindhu won the Badminton World Championships gold medal in 2019 after overcoming a strong field. In the absence of her arch-rival Carolina Marin of Spain, who defeated her to the gold medal in Rio, Sindhu has a pretty good chance in these Games.

On Tuesday, Sindhu was among a group of athletes who used video conferencing to engage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sindhu has been given a relatively easy draw in the Olympic group stages in Tokyo. Her road to a medal, though, will not be simple. Akane Yamaguchi and Nozomi Okuhara, both from Japan, are strong contenders. Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei and top-seeded Chinese shuttler Chen Yu Fei can all endanger her chances at the Games.
