Veteran driver Fernando Alonso has retired from the 2026 Australian Grand Prix after completing just 15 laps, following a technical issue with his Aston Martin.

The two-time world champion received a clear instruction from his team during the race: “Stop the car, we have an issue.” Shortly after the radio message, Alonso brought his Aston Martin AMR26 back toward the pit lane, ending his race early and recording a Did Not Finish (DNF).

Reliability concerns force early retirement

The retirement appears to be linked to ongoing reliability problems that Aston Martin has been facing with the AMR26. The team has struggled with mechanical and power unit-related issues since pre-season testing, including concerns about vibrations and general car fragility.

Because of these concerns, the team has adopted a cautious approach during the opening races of the season. If any abnormal signals or warning indicators appear on the car’s telemetry, the drivers are instructed to immediately stop running to avoid causing more severe damage to the engine or other critical components.

Aston Martin protecting the car from bigger damage

Reports before the race suggested that Alonso and the team were prepared to retire the car at the first sign of trouble. With limited spare components available early in the season, continuing to run a potentially damaged car could risk larger failures that might affect upcoming races.

As a result, once the issue was detected on lap 15, the team made the decision to end Alonso’s race immediately.

Stroll continues despite Aston Martin struggles

While Alonso’s race has ended, his teammate Lance Stroll remains on track in the other Aston Martin. However, the Canadian driver has also faced a difficult weekend after earlier engine-related issues and a challenging qualifying session.

Alonso’s early retirement adds another twist to an already dramatic opening race of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Melbourne.
