Spain Villarreal CF has officially announced that head coach Marcelino García Toral will depart the club at the end of the 2025-26 season. The news comes just days after the “Yellow Submarine” secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive year—a historic first for the club.
End of a Record-Breaking Era
Marcelino leaves as a legendary figure at the Estadio de la Cerámica. During his two stints with the club (2013–2016 and 2023–2026), he became the manager with the most games in Villarreal’s history, currently totaling 298 matches. He also holds the record for the most victories at the club, with 145 wins to date.
Why the Sudden Split?
Despite the team sitting comfortably in 3rd place in La Liga, reports suggest a “cocktail of reasons” for the separation:
• Contractual Disagreements: Negotiations for a renewal stalled when Marcelino requested a two-year extension, while the club only offered 12 months.
• Diverging Visions: Disagreements regarding squad investment and a desire for more competitive spending led to a breakdown in the relationship.
• Internal Friction: Reports also cite a decline in the relationship with the dressing room and a lack of integration for academy players.
What’s Next?
Villarreal will pay tribute to Marcelino during their final home match against Atlético de Madrid, which will serve as both a farewell and a Champions League celebration. As for Marcelino, the 60-year-old is reportedly eyeing a move to the Premier League for his next challenge.
